Kingdom Hearts II

13 04 2008

Kingdom Hearts II is a typical Japanese RPG with a weird collection of characters. Disney and Square have teamed up to bring a very interesting universe. This combination of characters is really the games strength as you learn the stories of Winnie the Pooh, Hercules, and Mickey Mouse. The first 2 hours and 30 minutes made me want to punch a wall with the amount of useless cutscenes but thankfully it cuts back a little bit after that. Story wise the game does well when characters are brought into a neutral world but when you go to say the Pirates of the Caribbean planet it breaks down. They attempt to compress a full length movie into a 30 minute level and it just doesn’t work.

Combat is mainly hack and slash with a few combos. Magic and the ability to have two partners travel with you (Goofy and Donald Duck ftw) make the combat enjoyable. If you have 40 hours on your hands and can handle tons of cut scenes you’ll find a very enjoyable game. Unfortunately, for the moment I burnt out around 25 hours in.

length: ~40 hours (time spent: 25)
score: 85% | metacritic: 87
