Eastern Promises

1 05 2008

Viggo Mortensen and David Cronenberg team back up again (previously on A History of Violence) to tell a story of a gangster with conflicting issues. Viggo is a driver for one of the top members of the Russian Mafia in London. A 14 year old girl dies giving birth that starts a trail that Naomi Watts follows to find the family of the girl so that her daughter may escape the life that awaits her (14 year old died in child birth). The movie is very well acted but everything in the movie feels like something everyone has already seen. No scenes hold any particular merit and what should be inciting incidents have no merit and are just mentioned in passing.

A simple plot with no real plot twists until near the end. It’s still worth seeing for the great acting from Viggo as a Russian gangster. Naomi is easy on the eyes as well.
